Israeli targets Hezbollah leadership as foreigners continue to evacuate Lebanon

The latest update from the AP:

Israeli troops punched into south Lebanon on Wednesday as warplanes flattened houses and buildings including one thought to hold Hezbollah's top leaders, intensifying an offensive despite mounting international pressure and a Lebanese appeal to spare the country further death and devastation.

The attempt to wipe out the Hezbollah leadership was the most dramatic action on a day that saw Israelis clash with the guerrillas and the Lebanese prime minister say about 300 people in his country had died in the eight-day offensive. Israel's broadcast warnings into south Lebanon telling civilians to leave the region, a possible prelude to a larger Israeli ground operation.

Meanwhile, "Hezbollah, undeterred, fired rockets into the Israeli Arab town of Nazareth" and "[t]housands of foreigners fled Lebanon in one of the largest evacuation operations since World War II".

On the latter, thousands of Canadians are among those trying to get out, as The Globe and Mail reports. The first ship with about 250 Canadian evacuees on board is on its way to Cyprus, but six other ships commissioned by Ottawa have "not [yet]been guaranteed safe passage by the Israelis".

Israeli Prime Minister Olmert has "assured [Prime Minister Harper] that Israeli forces will do what they can to accommodate Canada's efforts to remove its citizens from Lebanon".

Let's hope so.

The Lebanese prime minister has called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah militants, saying his country "has been torn to shreds".

Fouad Siniora said more than 300 people had been killed and 500,000 others displaced in a week of Israeli attacks.

Despite the fact that several countries -- including the Unites States and Lebanon -- have said that the Lebanese government doesn't have the capacity to extend its authority into Hezbollah-held territory, Israel has blamed the Lebanese government for the violence and charged it with the soldiers' safe release.

Is this right? Do you really think this is right? When did the world go mad... How can you possibley support this or consider being sympathetic to IDF actions in this situation. What bubble are you living in?

They are just trying to make a statement, their intent is not focused on erradicating Hezbollah. Its a grand show...

You can analyze things using a utilitarian point of view or a humanitarian one. It seems you have your utilitarian cap on today. You might as well be a cold-hearted neo-con.

"The Israeli public security minister, Avi Dichter, said Hezbollah had to understand that its "time is up" and that Israel will only accept a Lebanese government force at the border."

do they mean the Lebanese government force they have destroy?

Do they really think that Lebanese government will just be happy to do their bidding, after all that destruction and death?

  • Israeli terror group kidnaps Palestinians
    7/15/2006 1:00:00 AM GMT

"An Israeli terror group called “Gilad Shalhevet Brigades” claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of two Palestinian residents of Jerusalem, and says it will not release them unless Palestinians holding Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit release him, Ynet News reported Saturday.

Jerusalem District Police said they will investigate the group’s claim.

A statement issued by the extremist group, and received Thursday by Ynet News, said: “For your information, a few minutes ago we kidnapped two Palestinian workers in the Jerusalem area. The two are being held in a hidden location and we will conduct negotiation for their release through the media.

“We demand the immediate release of the kidnapped (Israeli) soldiers; if they will not be released within the next 48 hours, the lives of the Palestinians will be in danger.”

Negotiations with the terror group were to be made through the media, ynetnews.com said.

Israel has rejected demands by Palestinian resistance fighters holding the kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit to end the current offensive in Gaza Strip and release all Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails in exchange for Shalit's freedom.

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has reiterated that there will be no deals, that either Shalit will be released or we will act to bring about his release," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev was quoted earlier as saying."

    It goes both ways.
