Glasgow attack

I wasn't going to post on today's attack at Glasgow Airport until more was known, just as I haven't yet posted on the discovery of two unexploded car bombs yesterday in London, but here's the latest from the BBC:

I wasn't going to post on today's attack at Glasgow Airport until more was known, just as I haven't yet posted on the discovery of two unexploded car bombs yesterday in London, but here's the latest from the BBC:
A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport.
Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath.
They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car.
Strathclyde Police said two people had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident.
The airport has been evacuated and all flights suspended following the incident at 1515 BST.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has chaired a meeting of Cobra -- the emergency committee.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said the national terrorism threat level had been raised to its highest level of "critical", meaning an attack was expected "imminently".

Okay, did anybody but me think, in the way back part of their mind, that maybe, just maybe this may have been all put up by CheneyBush operatives to rekindle the seed of fear. The DOJ subpoena's, Cheney opening a new branch of government and major war support defections from respected Republicans would be cause to once again strike fear in the hearts of the masses. Crazy conspiricy thinking true but with all of the secrecy, lies and deception what else are we supposed to think?

I think that thought was in the back of many of our minds -- or maybe not the back: many of us thought it right away, or at least thought it was a possibility, or at least were prepared to question the "official" story.
One of the problems with what Bush and Cheney have done is that they have established, or exaggerated, a culture in which such conspiracy theorizing is common. There is, of course, always going to be such theorizing. It isn't just Bush and it isn't just the post-9/11 culture. But Bush and Cheney (and their ilk) have repeatedly and aggressively used terrorism, or the threat of terrorism, as both a partisan wedge with which to label their opponents traitors and a convenient tool with which to expand their powers. This would be a problem no matter what, but it is especially a problem given that so much has gone wrong on their watch, that is, that they have been such failures. To me, to you, and to many others, they simply have no credibility left -- not that they had much to begin with. They've cried wolf so often, and for such transparently self-interested reasons, that they have lost our trust -- again, not that there was much trust to begin with. What amazes me is that they have any credibility left at all, but such is the power of fear: it works, even against the forces of reason on the other side. It may not make much sense to call them Nazis, but what they are doing is characteristic of fascism. Just read Orwell: control through fear.
It seems unlikely that the events in the U.K. were concocted by this fearmongering machine, but the point is that we have reached a point where it is not necessarily unreasonable to speculate in such a way. And you're right, RHD. After all "the secrecy, lies and deception what else are we supposed to think?"
